I recently joined Dr. R. Kishore Kumar, Dr. Latheesh Kambam, and Dr. Praveen in inaugurating the Therapeutic Hypothermia Workshop, held at Medicover Women & Children’s Hospital, Whitefield, Bangalore, as part of the South NEOCon 2026 conference. Over 950 doctors from across India and abroad attended the three-day event, which included 12 dedicated conference sessions on advancing neonatal care.
Why this workshop matters
Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) — a condition caused by oxygen deprivation around the time of birth — can cause serious, lasting brain injury in newborns if not addressed quickly. The workshop focused on therapeutic hypothermia, commonly known as “cooling therapy,” a scientifically validated treatment that can meaningfully reduce the risk of brain injury when started within the first six hours of a baby’s life.
Sessions covered the full clinical pathway doctors and nurses need to manage HIE safely:
- Early identification of at-risk newborns
- Selecting the right infants for cooling therapy
- Safe administration of the treatment
- Continuous monitoring during treatment
- Structured post-treatment follow-up
Building better neonatal care for Indian newborns
A recurring theme through the workshop was the importance of research tailored to Indian newborns specifically — ensuring that scientifically proven protocols are translated into practice at every NICU, not just tertiary centers. As Director of Neonatal-Perinatal Services at Medicover Whitefield and Associate Editor of BMJ Paediatrics Open, this is an area I remain deeply invested in — both in clinical practice and through ongoing research.
Workshops like this reflect exactly what South NEOCon aims to be: a platform where neonatologists, pediatricians, and nurses from across South India can share knowledge and refine how we protect the most vulnerable patients in medicine — newborns in their first hours of life.
